12:31PM - Mayo Diet

I'm wanting to do the Mayo Clinic Diet for 7 days (the real Mayo Diet, not the fad one). What should I eat as my main source of protein? (I'm not vegan, but I don't eat eggs or fish.) The Mayo Diet calls for proteins and fats such as in fish (which I don't eat). Normally my proteins come from nuts, oils, certain veggies, and veggie-meat... but the proteins in vegetables won't count, because the vegetable only counts as the vegetable in the Mayo Diet.

Help?

10:04PM

Hey guys~

Hope your holidays are cheerful and full of...tofu and uh, broccoli. ;D

I would like your insight! There is this company that sells milk produced in my area. Most of the farms that supply milk and eggs are within a 25 mile drive of me, which I like! They're family-owned and operated. Anyway, I was looking at a few aerial photos of the farms and would like some input. Here's the links:

http://www.glsweetnam.com/FarmersCow/Farmerscow.html

Can you glean anything from the buildings? Is there anything you can tell about the conditions by looking at the photos? What I'd really like to know is are these conditions good, healthy and humane for the animals? Might sound silly but after reading Jonathon Safran Foer's "Eating Animals" I've become more than concerned about the way our food-producing animals are being treated. I went veg originally for health reasons originally. But recently the idea of eating eggs and drinking milk have become sickening when I think of genetically-altered Frankenstein chickens squirting out egg after egg in wholly unnatural sheds. So...thoughts?

2:48PM - Teriyaki sauce?

I'm obsessed with the A1 Kobe Sesame Teriyaki Sauce and I think it's pretty much the most amazing stuff I've ever eaten. Unfortunately, they don't sell it in my town and I haven't had any since I moved and I really want some.. so do any of you know a close equivalent that I could possibly find at a store here? Or better yet, a recipe that tastes like it? I think the reason I like it so much is that it doesn't taste all that much like other teriyaki sauces that I've had. I have a Wal-Mart and Winn Dixie to choose from and neither of those have it. Thanks for the help.

2:14PM - [x-post] Veggie soup, veggie broth

I have a question.
I cook veggie soup (vegetable s in veggie broth), but sometimes I don't have the time to stop and make the soup (or the money to run to the store and stock up on more vegetables)... so sometimes I just have hot veggie broth as my meal.

Am I still getting good nutrition from the broth?
(I know "not as greatly as if you ate the vegetables") but it's better than replacing my veggie soup with junkfood.

So, in your opinion is drinking the veggie broth as a replacement ok?

3:07PM - Freezing Dahl

Anyone done it with any success?  I'm the only one in my house who will eat it, and I was just gifted a LOT of lentils and green chilis.  If it freezes well, I'd like to make up a whole bunch.  Thanks.  :)

Cross posted.  Sorry if you see repeats.

1:22PM - Protein

I rarely eat nuts, but I eat beans (lima) in soups and salads. I use Morningstar Farms products as my main source of protein (mostly the veggie burgers and crumbles, not so much the breaded items.) Is this good? I know they are a good source of protein, but are their products HEALTHY??

6:01PM - Learning Korean

Hello everyone! I'm so sorry to intrude but I've been wanting to learn Korean for about a year now and figured I should cast away my anxiety and just try it. I'm a Japanese major at college and even though I'm still a new speaker, I tend to pick up on it really quickly. I've always wanted to learn Korean as well but it seems very difficult for native English speakers to learn. It's such a beautiful language though and I really want to attempt to learn it...

I tried looking around the past few weeks for Korean classes, but I couldn't find any decent ones in my area. I also tried looking for private Korean tutors, and I only found one that was way out of my price range.... Of course I'll keep checking back, but in the meantime, can anyone give me advice on how to start up?

I'd really, really appreciate it!

9:47PM - Vegetarian jerky?

I'm watching National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (family tradition that I'm making my FH participate in, lol), and though I hate turkey, I did see the one part where it comes out all dry and crunchy, and I realized that I miss that. Hard, crunchy, salty goodness... without the turkey flavor, lol.

So I did a search for vegetarian jerky, and I came across VeganDream.com's vegetarian jerky. I don't live in N CA, so I can't get it locally, but they have an option to buy online. Before I do that, though, I wanted to see if anyone had tried it, and if they recommend it. If not, are there alternatives?

Thanks in advance! And happy holidays, everyone! :)

9:26AM - TOOTING

Hi vegetarians! I went pescetarian a few months ago, finally segued into full vegetarian a week ago, and now I eyeball veganism. I love it and I feel better than ever in life. One problem:
I am SO FRIGGIN GASSY now.

Seriously. Always I be burping and farting, it's terrible. Mostly I eat nuts, beans, grains, greens, and roots, not a lot of fruits. But a lot of toots.

What should I do to remedy this situation?

12:12PM - Recipe plea

Hi there! I'm new to this community and, being terribly cheeky, have got a little plea for help. I bought The Complete Vegetarian Cookbook by Chris Hardisty (see the cover here) a few years back, and I usually use one of the recipes from there for my Christmas alternative to meat. I can't remember the name of the recipes but it involves using courgettes and breadcumbs to make a sort of chunky paste-like substance, and layering that with carrots, and then baking it.

My problme is, that I started attending a univeristy two hours away from home this year, and I've gone and left the cookbook in my student house, as I had trouble fitting everything into my suitacse to come home for Christmas, and never ever thought about sticking a hefty recipe book in there! I was wondering if anyone else owns the book and would be so kind as to scan it for me, type it up, or even just give me the basics of the recipes (such as the ingredients and weights, then I can probably remember it from there)?

I know it's a long shot and probably fate telling me I should try something new this year! :D Thanks!

8:00PM - Ever quit being a vegetarian?

Has anyone gone from being vegetarian back to being an omnivore?

I've been a vegetarian for almost 10 years (I'm currently 23), but I'm having a hard time these days. I just started my career and often go out for meals with co-workers. It's getting annoying to have to get completely separate appetizers and meals that don't have meat in them. On top of that, I have to deal with people going "Why are you a vegetarian?" I'm sick of answering questions, but it's rude for me to ignore them or fire back with "Why don't you eat mustard on your cookies?"

To complicate the situation a little bit more, I took a job where I will be traveling full-time internationally for three years starting this fall/winter. I know from experience that it's difficult to be a vegetarian while traveling and I can't even imagine what it's like in foreign countries. I'm bound to start eating meat again out of necessity. Plus, there's going to be a ton of unique cuisines I don't want to miss out on.

Not to mention, I'm just not sure I want to be a vegetarian anymore. Sometimes I just miss having bacon at breakfast or diving into a giant grilled burger, but when I see it in a restaurant, it makes my stomach churn.

I'm so confused; I feel like going back to eating meat and see that I will eventually HAVE to, but it grosses me out. Anyone have any input?

5:28PM - Fishy Situation

Hey everyone!

I'm new to this group as well as being a vegetarian. Since I began my journey as a vegetarian, I've been struggling with the idea of eating fish and seafood. I don't eat meat primarily for ethical reasons and fish farms fall into that unethical treatment thing that I'm trying to avoid. On the other hand, eating fish and seafood would make restaurant dining eating with my family much easier.

I guess I'm just looking for your opinions and whether or not some of you eat fish and seafood. I understand that at the end of the day it's my decision but I would appreciate some guidance.

Thanks!

with little kisses,
Kristin

12:54PM - The thought that counts

As a diabetic vegetarian, I greatly appreciate the thoughtful friends who have given me beautiful dry bean soup mixes in mason jars this year instead of the usual sugary treats. These are quick things I can put into the crock pot and don't require much work.

Unfortunately, a lot of the folks who make these are not people who eat bean soup on a regular basis. They don't realize that dry beans need to be rinsed after soaking to wash out gas-promoting residues, so they include the spices right in with the beans. The lovely spices will just get washed down the drain!

As it is, I have devised a solution in the form of a colander and a plate. The spices easily go through the holes onto the plate, but the dry beans stay put.

10:00AM - Holiday Dinner Ideas

What are you making for your holiday dinner? I usually make homemade cinnamon rolls for breakfast but I have no clue what to make for dinner. What are you making??

9:29AM - An interesting article from the BBC...

I found this article this morning on a link from the BBC news page. It's generally an article that uses the typical Christmas turkey as a segway into reasons for going veg*n. I found it fairly easy to understand (although the intro is somewhat preachy) and would recommend it to anybody who's looking for a good intro article for people they know.

Think Before You Carve
by Justin Rowlatt

Can I apologise right now if the content of this blog dampens your Christmas spirit? It is about something many of us believe we should do, but very few of us actually get round to doing.
It was certainly the hardest thing I did during my "year of living ethically" for the BBC.
But Adolf Hitler managed it and so did Linda McCartney. Indeed, the government's former chief economist says we should all do it.
Are you there yet?

12:26PM - Got the recipe?!?

There has got to be a vegetarian sausage ball recipe out there... I mean, it's really just spicey cheesy bread, right?

Does anyone have a recipe for no-meat sausage balls?

I don't even think you'd need fake sausage in it - in fact, I'm sure it'd be better without the fake sausage.
